First Game of 2012: The Winter’s Brawl

The first match of the Friday, January 20, 2012 double header at Carmen Gardens was a tight match up until the end between the PJRD men’s teams the Indiana Avenue Enforcers and the Broad Street Brawlers. Wags, of the Enforcers, set the tone of the game by scoring the first four points and also the first penalty for pulling Brawlers’ jammer Nurse Ratchet right down with him when the Brawlers’ blocked him. By the second period, the game was still up for the grabbing at 27 to 24. More than once the Enforcers’ had a solo jammer out that I Don’t Care Bear finished off before any points could be scored, but the Enforcers’ blockers put a stop to this shake down by sandwiching the mauling bear. In one exciting jam, the Brawlers’ Ed McMayhem sped past the Enforcers’ blockers with an airborne leap over teammate Bunsen Bruiser only to be knocked into the crowd at the last moment by the Enforcers’ Sik Boy. The final score of this thrilling match was 42 to 32, with the Enforcers for the win.

The second match showcased the Sowinski Cup Champions the Dishonor Roll (DHR) versus the PennJersey She-Devils’ All-Stars. With a winning score of 33 to 14, the Dishonor Roll proved they will be the team to beat this season. DHR’s Hellanor Rollsevelt was instrumental to the win, scoring 17 of the 33 points as jammer. Sparring jammers were a real crowd pleaser, and more than once a player landed in the audience. In an epic jammer battle between DHR’s Classy Chassis and the She-Devils’ Maulin Munster, Classy taunted and knocked down Maulin on both sides of the track. Not to go down without a fight, Maulin obtained one of the early penalties for holding Classy until she joined her on the floor. In another electrifying moment, DHR’s Bexi Wrexi outmaneuvered recent rookie graduate PamDEMONium who was hot on her heels by jumping up on two feet to call off the jam immediately before being knocked down a second time.

Defensive strategy was the key to this fast-paced and passionate match. In the first period, when the score was still tied 7 to 7, the She-Devils’ Stella Threat was whipped through the pack by Hottie Hemmorhage only to be used as a bowling ball by DHR’s Beatrix R. ForKids. There were moments the She-Devils’ Hottie Hemmorhage seemed to be pinning in three DHR players single-handedly but it was not enough to hold back the ferocious grit of the Dishonor Roll.

You will not want to miss the upcoming Valentine’s Day Massacre double header on Friday, February 17 when the PennJersey Roller Derby and South Jersey Roller Girl A and B teams square off!
